Groundwater Subsurface Analysis Utilising Passive Seismic Data in Northwestern Australia

June, 2019
In 2019, Odyssey Geophysics joined a detailed study to map the groundwater basement depth in a remote part of Western Australia, where our team analysed more than 1000 short 20 minute passive seismic recordings. Despite varied data quality, the team successfully produced high-quality HVSR curves through rigorous QAQC procedures. The study analysed the correlation between peak H/V ratio frequencies and subsurface structures. 1D inversion of HVSR curves for single-site velocity profiles were processed. A 2D profile inversion
was also performed, updating a 2D Voronoi parameterized model with 1D velocity profiles, using rjMCMC with 2D Voronoi parameterization. The results enhanced the understanding of the region's subsurface characteristics and showcased the effectiveness of cost-efficient passive seismic techniques for such applications.

Passive Seismic Technique Investigation in South Australia

June, 2019
In mid-2018, Odyssey Geophysics Pty. Ltd. joined in a seismic data processing project in a basin in Southern Australia. Our primary aim was to delineate layered velocity structures and ascertain the depth to the foundational basement, contributing data to broader geological assessments.

Utilising data from a passive seismic survey consisting of 6 spiral arrays of 12 broadband sensors conducted in April 2016, we applied Horizontal-to-Vertical Spectral Ratio (HVSR) and Spatial Autocorrelation (SPAC) methods. Our goal was to identify inter-basinal interfaces and estimate bedrock depth, while also analyzing sedimentary rocks and formations to decipher the subsurface profile.
This project was part of a larger investigation, aiming to benchmark cost effective geophysical techniques for determining bedrock and subsurface structures. Odyssey Geophysics showcased its capability to manage and interpret data effectively, proving that passive seismic methods could be a reliable and cost-effective solution for subsurface investigations. Our work not only resolved sediment-bedrock interfaces down to approximately 300 meters but also demonstrated our proficiency in seismic studies, contributing significantly to ongoing research and innovation in geological sciences.
